Intelligent systems should primarily support people in solving problems but would not solve problems on their own. AI's design should reduce dangerous, physically demanding, and repetitive work. This is what the Study Commission “Artificial Intelligence - Social Responsibility and Economic, Social and Ecological Potential” of the German Bundestag recommended in its final report published on 26.10.2020.

The German Bundestag set up the Study Commission on June 26, 2018, comprising 19 government representatives and 19 experts. Among the Commission's experts is Prof. Sami Haddadin, acting director of the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM). The Commission identified a common understanding of the AI technologies, discussed its social, economic, and ecological consequences, and developed recommendations for action for the legislature.

AI technologies already play a relevant role in different areas of our living environment and have great potential for solving current societal challenges. Germany and Europe must work towards ensuring that values guide AI’s development and AI’s advantages and opportunities take place for the benefit of people and the environment, where the risks are weighed up and, if necessary, limited.
