MIRMI researcher awarded ERC for work in regenerative medicine

The European Research Council (ERC) awarded nine ERC Starting Grants to TUM researchers, recognising their impressive work in science and technology innovation. One of the recipients is Prof. Berna Özkale Edelmann, for her research in the field of nano- and microrobotics.

Nine researchers at TUM were awarded additional Starting Grants by the ERC, this year with especial focus on TUM’s interdisciplinary research in medicine and health. Among those awarded with the grant was Prof. Berna Özkale Edelmann, who is Professor of Nano- and Microrobotics at TUM and a member of MIRMI. Her work uses smart microgels to aid patients recovering from heart attacks, by transforming stem cells into functional heart cells. This technology could significantly improve treatment options for patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, particularly those who have experienced heart attacks.
