Urban vegetation’s climate impact mapped in detail

Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a high-resolution CO₂ flux model to measure how much carbon dioxide urban vegetation absorbs and emits.
Prof. Jia Chen and her team developed a high-resolution CO₂ flux model showing that, on average, urban vegetation compensates for around 2% of a city’s annual CO₂ emissions.

The study shows that city trees can absorb as much CO₂ as Munich’s traffic emits on some summer days. Overall, urban vegetation offsets about two percent of the city’s emissions, while grass areas often act as net CO₂ sources.
